"My husband and I just returned from a wonderful 5 night stay at this lovely home. What was supposed to be 3 nights, turned into 5 with a cancellation following our intended stay. Weather was rainy earlier in the week so we were thrilled to get a couple of bonus days of beautiful fall weather! We chose this house because it basically had everything we were looking for...on a lake, kayaks, fire pit, hot tub, hiking and biking close by. We rode the Ashuelot rail trail which we picked up in town, about 3 miles from the house. We rode through the Ashuelot covered bridge, along the river, passing abandoned buildings and rail cars that sat eerily reminiscent of the railroad transportation system of days past. This trail is NOT a loop, so after 13+ miles and beginning to feel weary, it was a difficult push to make it back. But then there was the hot tub awaiting our aching muscles. The following rainy day was welcomed by the fact I was really too sore to do much else. We drove to Keene and had dinner at Luca's- excellent food - we highly recommend. All of the books/brochures and maps that Paul and Anne provide, were a great resource. We also found a video store in Keene where were able to rent a season of a program we had started back at home which we watched with the fireplace on to take the chill off of the rainy evening. We were tempted to hike Modanock but with Pisgah so close, we decided to hike there. We started off at the visitor center and began our hike across Doolittle Path onto the trail. What a beautiful trail through a mossy, pine forest with little rivers and ponds. There are signs with historical information about homesteads that existed throughout the area- some over 200+ years. You can still see some the original stone foundations. It was a a perfect fall, sunny day. Trails weren't too rough or steep- mostly on gravel or dirt paths. At the house, my husband fished off the dock and took the canoe out- caught/released some large mouth bass. It's a relatively small lake, but was enough for us to take the kayaks or pedal boat out to explore and also to enjoy the view from the house/dock. I can't say enough about Paul- he is a great host-he and his wife have really thought of everything! There were more things than we could even do- lots for kids, too, but we really enjoyed our time away without the kids :). We slept as good, if not better, than at home-very, comfortable, plenty of pillows and blankets, and cozy down comforter."
