 "I rented this property for the weekend to celebrate my 50th birthday with five other women. We had a wonderful time. The house is beautiful and comfortable. While it was very clean and organized, it had the feeling of a home and not a stripped down rental property. It is nicely furnished with an eclectic variety of furniture and asian art collected on the owner's travels around the world. At the same time, we felt like we could put our feet up and relax and make ourselves at home. The kitchen was well stocked with anything we needed (though not gourmet or high end). There are a good selection of spices in the cupboard, but the fridge is clean and empty. A good balance. Our first evening was cool and we enjoyed a lovely fire in front of the stone fireplace. In the morning we woke up to amazing water views and had a nice walk into town to visit galleries and shops. Tim, the owner, was easy to communicate with through out the reservation and leasing process and was delightfully helpful to us when we arrived with recommendations for restaurants and nice local walks. There is an excellent notebook with all the information you need to make yourself at home (how to use the grills, where to find cushions for the ample patio furniture, etc.). He was available but allowed us plenty of privacy. And, he returned my damage deposit within a week.  "Thank you for letting us share in the beauty and majesty of this incredible property—we do quite a lot of traveling together (and have done so for almost 20 years) and your house is in our top 5 all time. The design of the house is perfection—from the view to the multiple levels that all connect to allow for the perfect combination of intimacy and solitude. The kitchen was masterfully appointed and provisioned, and left one with a comfortable working space that contained everything you needed right at hand. Overall your thoughtful hand is evident everywhere—there is always just the right place to sit, a place to put your drink, and plenty of light to read, etc. And everywhere you had a choice you went “top of the line” in appliances and conveniences, which is not lost on the discerning consumer. It’s almost impossible to improve a perfection, but a couple of fantasy thoughts to improve on paradise: - a large-screen LCD in the downstairs library would be outstanding. - a discreet, nicely landscaped hot tub on the outside deck area.  "Thank you for your personal recommendations. I took my 9-year old son to Plum Island where we had an excellent 8-mile bike ride on mostly level road with almost no traffic. The views were beautiful: woods on one side and nature reserve marshland on the other. Then we walked on the beautiful sandy beach for an hour. We visited Halibut Point State Park as a family and were taken by its beauty. It’s only five minutes from the house and is absolutely gorgeous. The quarry lake was serene with shady wooded paths and plenty of granite benches to sit and enjoy the view. The outlook is spectacular and the rock-strewn beach was breathtaking. On a completely different note we ordered pizza from the Rockport House of Pizza. Steve, the owner for 23 years, custom-made our pizza (we asked for a crispy crust) and helped us load our food for 10 in the car. Good pick! I echo all the sentiments in this book. "The house, furnishings, appliances, etc. are new, well-maintained, functional and comfortable. The kitchen and living area are spacious, the library is well-stocked, and there is plenty of room to sit and spread out, multiple TVs, CD player and sound system, and a nice deck with a chiminea and gas grill. Whatever we needed in the house was there. The views from the house are excellent. Windows span the entire back part of the house, giving a panoramic sight of the harbor and the ocean. The views are not blocked by other houses. There is a path on the property leading down to the harbor within 50 yards or so. We jumped from the rocks into the harbor (the water is cool), but if you want a beach, it is within a short walking distance (5-10 minutes). The location of the house is convenient if you want to get out and about. It is very close to the Center of Rockport, and also close to the roads and highways that lead to other interesting locations such as Boston, Essex, Manchester, Gloucester, Annisquam, and Salem. There are a number of good restaurants within 10-15 minutes of the house. Groceries and other needs are all within 10 minutes of this house. Despite the proximity of the house to all these necessary amenities, it is very quiet and private. We enjoyed the wonderful views of the harbor and ocean without any disturbance. Best of all, the owner, Tim Clarke, was helpful and attentive to our needs and requests for information. He was professional and polite on the front end, when we were making arrangements to rent the house. Once that was done, he then made every effort to make sure our stay was as pleasant as it could be. You won't get the level of sincere attention that he provides from a rental company. All of this may sound too good to be true, but we are not overstating our thoughts about our stay. "Owner’s Response to 7/27/04 Comment: The ant issue was valid. We hired a service that comes four times a year to treat such problems. Since then we have had no further issue with ants. We take trash to the town transfer station every day or two as needed (except Sunday & Monday when it is closed) so our three trash cans have been sufficient. If we need to add another we will. We now include a basic house cleaning in our weekly rental rates. We have removed older/duplicate pots and pans and added a griddle. As of 10/04 the house has a new range that works fine. We also added an umbrella for the patio table. For 3 years the former owners returned to the apartment for July but that has ended. The current owner lives in the apartment full-time. It is not rented. It has separate entrance, separate parking, and a separate terrace with small privacy fence. Guest privacy at the house has never been an issue. Other improvements since this 7/04 email: new screen/storm doors for the front and side entries to maximize ventilation in summer; a stainless double sink in the kitchen to replace a single sink that had seen better days; an outdoor chimenea for the patio--not so useful in summer but makes the patio cozy and pleasant in cooler fall/spring weather." - , 07/28/04
"From an email to owner: We had a terrific holiday and enjoyed meeting you. We tried to respect your home. If it was left in an unacceptable fashion please let me know. You asked for our thoughts about the house so here they are: 1. Location, view and physical attributes, for us, cannot be beat. 2. I think you have an issue with ants. 3. You ought to add some additional "locking" garbage cans. For folks like us that bring 6 + guests who intend to eat in a lot, 3 garbage cans are not sufficient. 4. For multiple-week renters, the rental rate ought to include one cleaning service visit. It's a very large home and with a fair number of guests. With respect, we have rented similar "premium" homes in other locales, both in US and abroad, and cleaning service is customary and, I think, an attraction. 5. The kitchen is almost over-stocked. Think about eliminating some of the older pots & pans. Think about adding a griddle. 6. We had difficulty getting water to boil in a pot for things like pasta. 7. Think about adding an umbrella to the round table on the deck. On calm days the deck does not get much breeze due to the lovely (rosa rugosa) bushes. Some shade would be wonderful and add to usage of the deck. 8. With respect to the attached apartment, the presence of the former owners was for us a benefit. I don't think we bothered them and they never bothered us. I am not sure whether you intend to rent the apartment to others. If so I could envision the set-up being problematic. To be clear we loved the house and the uniform opinion of our family is that they want to go back next year.
